8. Endocrinología muscular y su relación con la nutrición

Abstract

El músculo esquelético es un órgano endocrino activo. Durante la contracción de las fibras musculares, éste produce y libera al torrente sanguíneo citoquinas y otros péptidos, denominados mioquinas, gracias a los cuales puede comunicarse tanto con las células localmente dentro del músculo, de forma autocrina y paracrina, como con otros tejidos distantes, ejerciendo sus efectos endocrinos.  Por tanto, la buena salud del músculo es un aspecto fundamental sobre todo durante el envejecimiento. La sarcopenia es la pérdida de masa y fuerza del músculo esquelético dependiente de la edad, lo que aumenta el riesgo de resultados adversos, como discapacidad física y mala calidad de vida.

Este artículo destaca la importancia del músculo como órgano endocrino y los beneficios de la nutrición, sola o combinada con el ejercicio, para mantener un músculo esquelético saludable y así prevenir la sarcopenia.

 

 

Skeletal muscle is an active endocrine organ. During the contraction of muscle fibers, skeletal muscle produces and releases cytokines and other peptides, called myokines, into the bloodstream, thanks to which it can communicate both with cells locally within the muscle, in an autocrine and paracrine manner, and with other tissues distant, exerting its endocrine effects. The good health of the skeletal muscle is therefore a fundamental aspect, especially during aging. Sarcopenia is the age-dependent loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, which increases the risk of adverse outcomes, such as physical disability and poor quality of life.

This article highlights the importance of muscle as an endocrine organ and the benefits of nutrition, alone or combined with exercise, in maintaining healthy skeletal muscle and thus preventing sarcopenia.
