Abstract

There is growing scientific evidence of the association between nutrition, muscle mass, strength, and function in elderly patients, suggesting the importance of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. This review summarizes the meeting held by the ESCEO working group on 09/08/2016 to discuss the scientific evidence and the role of protein intake and physical exercise as an anabolic stimulus for protein synthesis. However, much of this evidence comes from observational studies conducted in high-income countries. Clinical trials with more diverse populations are needed to fully understand the amount and duration of the effects of nutrient intake on function, in order to be able to define intake patterns in elderly patients.
